Get reminded of a deadline
Tell Godspeed about anything with a day attached. It reminds you as the day comes and stops once you say it is done.
On this page
Tell Godspeed about a tax return or a contract to cancel by March, and it speaks up at the right moment, not every day.
Tell it about one
#Say it in the chat, in your own words:
Answer its questions. It asks them once, never again for that thing:
- What is true when it is finished?
- "Is there a day after which this costs you something, or is it a day you'd like to have it done by?"
- What it costs you if it slips, when there is a last day.
- How it could tell you did it without asking. "It cannot" is a fine answer.
It also asks whether it repeats.
A day you would like it done by is a target: it stays quiet until that day, then mentions it once. A last day, after which it costs you something, is a deadline: the closer it comes, the more often it is mentioned.
It needs a day: "someday" is not a target, "by the end of May" is.
How it reminds you
#The routine Deadline reminders looks every morning at 08:00 and mentions only the dates that need it that day. Your first goal starts it (How the daily work runs).
- On a server installed with the one-line command, the reminder comes in Telegram.
- Everywhere else, it is a note in the notebook's From your routines folder.
- With a morning brief switched on, your dates are in the brief instead, under Deadlines and targets.
When a target passes
#When the target was your only date, it asks once, the morning after: "A new date, or as soon as you can?"
- Reply with a new date, and it stays quiet until then.
- Reply "as soon as you can", and it gets a short mention about once a week.
- Reply "drop it", and nothing mentions it again.
No reply counts as "as soon as you can".
Deadlines an add-on found
#An add-on can give Godspeed a deadline it found, for example a documents add-on when a scanned letter says "pay by 20 November". It appears in your list, reminders and morning brief, like the deadlines you add. You close, move or drop it the same way. The add-on sends no reminders of its own.
Once you change its day or name, or close or drop it, it is yours. The add-on never changes it again, even when it reads the letter again.
Close, move or drop one
#- Done: tell it, for example "I sent the timesheet", and it closes it. It never closes one on a guess.
- A new day: say "aim for the 20th", or give a new date.
- A wrong date: ask it to correct the date.
- Called off: say "drop it". Only you can drop one.
You can also add one in the notebook: Settings, Follow-through, Obligations and reminders. It asks what needs doing and what is true when it is done. Then give the deadline and what missing it costs, or a day you would like it done by.
Each deadline is a page in your notebook, under Deadlines, and the day you finished one is a moment on your timeline. Both are plain Markdown you can read and edit in any editor, and both travel to your other computers the way every note does. On your own computer, mc-due list in a terminal shows them all (Terminal commands).
If you were using Godspeed before 2.0.0-beta.12, your deadlines were small files in the due folder instead. They become pages by themselves the first time your deadlines are read after the update, with nothing for you to do. Once every page says the same as its old file, the old files are put in archives so nothing is lost. A file that cannot be read stays where it is, and your reminders say so until it is fixed. If your mission control folder is your own Git repository, the old files stay exactly where they are, with one note beside them. Nothing you have committed changes under you.
