# Where your data lives

Canonical: https://godspeedmissioncontrol.com/guide/where-your-data-lives

Everything Godspeed knows sits in one folder on your own computer or your server: your mission control folder. There is no Godspeed sign-up, and Godspeed keeps no copy of your data anywhere else.

## Your folder and your notebook

The folder holds what you told Godspeed, its rules and skills, your goals and your notes, as plain text files. [Folders and files](/guide/folders) shows where it is and what is in it.

The notebook is the web page that shows this folder. Each note, person or fact in it is a readable file in `notebook/` inside your folder.

## What leaves your machine

- **Your AI account** gets your messages and whatever Godspeed reads to answer them, such as notes, files and emails. The routines use it too. You choose the company and pay it directly.
- **Services you switch on** get what their job needs. Telegram carries your chats on the one-line server. GitHub sync copies your notes and text files to your private repository. A search-by-meaning service gets your notes, unless it runs on your own computer.
- **Public web pages** are read when Godspeed researches your goals or looks something up.

The installers send nothing about you or your install. [Outside services](/guide/external-services) lists every service and what it gets.

## An example

You type "make a note: dentist on Thursday at 10" in the notebook's chat. Godspeed sends your message to your AI account, which tells it what to save. The note becomes a file in `notebook/`. If you connected GitHub sync, that file reaches your private repository within a minute. No one else gets it.

## Who can open your notebook

- **On your own computer**, only that computer can reach it, at `http://127.0.0.1:47831`. It asks for no sign-in, so anyone using your computer can open it.
- **On a server**, it has an `https://` address with a username and password.
- **Other AI apps** get in only with a key from **Settings**, **Connect other assistants**. The boxes on each key decide what it may touch.

**AI Visibility**, under **Settings**, **Privacy, suggestions and notifications**, keeps chosen notes out of the AI's way while your own search still finds them. It is not a lock: the file stays in your folder, where Godspeed can open it.

## Where keys are kept

Keys and passwords stay on the machine where you entered them. Sync never sends them to GitHub, and backups leave them out.

- **Your AI sign-in** is kept by [Hermes](/guide/glossary#hermes): on Windows in `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Godspeed Mission Control State\hermes-profile` (`Godspeed Mission Control Full Alpha State` if you installed before 2.0.0-beta.11), on a Mac or Linux in `~/.hermes`.
- **A key typed into Settings, Your AI** is in `.godspeed/provider.json` in your folder. When your routines use it, Hermes keeps it too, in its `.env` file, or in its `config.yaml` for another service.
- **Your Gmail app password** is locked in `.godspeed/mail/imap/` in your home folder. On the one-line server, in the assistant's home folder inside the server's data volume.
- **Your server password** is stored only as a scrambled check value.

A copy of your whole folder on a USB drive includes `.godspeed` and any key saved there.
