# Update Godspeed Mission Control

Canonical: https://godspeedmissioncontrol.com/guide/update

Nothing updates by itself. An update goes straight to the newest release and keeps everything you made, including skills you changed.

## On Windows

1. Press the Windows key, type `update` and choose **Update my mission control**.
2. A window looks for a newer release. If there is one, it downloads it, checks it and installs it, which can take up to half an hour. A copy of your notebook is saved first, and your notes, files and settings stay as they are.
3. It ends with "Your mission control is up to date". Press Enter to close the window.

If there is no newer release, the window says "You have the newest version already" and brings your mission control folder up to date instead.

You can also update with the installer:

1. Download [GodspeedSetup.exe](https://github.com/MichaelZelbel/godspeed-mission-control/releases/latest/download/GodspeedSetup.exe) and run it. If Windows shows **Windows protected your PC**, click **More info**, then **Run anyway**.
2. If **Your conversations** appears, click **Next**.
3. The page says "This PC already has Godspeed Mission Control, so I am going to UPDATE it:". Click **Install**.
4. A window shows the work. You see "Your mission control is up to date". Click **Finish**.

An installer older than your version stops at once: "This PC already has a newer Godspeed Mission Control than this installer carries, so nothing was changed."

## On a Mac or Linux computer

1. Run this in a terminal:

   ```bash
   curl -fsSL https://godspeedmissioncontrol.com/install | bash
   ```

2. On Linux, type your password if asked.
3. It ends with "Your mission control is in" and your folder. The notebook runs again on the new release.

## On a server

The one-line server makes no backup before an update, so [copy one off the server](/guide/back-up#back-up-a-server) first. Then log in as you did to install, and run the same line again:

```bash
curl -fsSL https://godspeedmissioncontrol.com/server | bash
```

It keeps your address, account and data. A server without Docker updates like a Linux computer.

## Check which release you have

Each release has its own code of letters and digits. The newest release's code follows `"productCommit":` in [stage.json](https://github.com/MichaelZelbel/godspeed-mission-control/blob/beta/stage.json), the file that says what an install or update brings today. If yours differs, a newer release is out.

- **Windows:** in your notebook, open **Settings**, **About**: yours is under **Release code**. It is also in `%LOCALAPPDATA%\Godspeed Mission Control State\installation.json` (`Godspeed Mission Control Full Alpha State` if you installed before 2.0.0-beta.11), after `"kitCommit":`.
- **Mac or Linux:** in your notebook, open **Settings**, **About**: yours is under **Release code**. Or run `cat ~/godspeed-v2/.godspeed/integrated-runtime/version`.
- **One-line server:** running the install line always brings the newest.

## If the previous edition is on the same computer

- **Windows, with version 2 beside it:** update as above. The page before **Install** adds "This PC keeps working from" and the previous edition's folder: that one stays as it is.
- **Windows, with only the previous edition:** the installer shows **You already have a mission control**. Click **Next** to bring that mission control up to date and add the notebook. To leave it untouched instead, tick the box, click **Next** and keep the suggested folder, `%USERPROFILE%\godspeed-v2`.
- **Mac or Linux:** in step 1, run this instead:

  ```bash
  curl -fsSL https://godspeedmissioncontrol.com/install | bash -s -- --beside --godspeed "$HOME/godspeed-v2"
  ```
