# Add a skill

Canonical: https://godspeedmissioncontrol.com/guide/add-a-skill

A skill is a set of written instructions for one job, such as planning your day. Godspeed follows it whenever you ask for that job. [Skills](/guide/skills) explains how it picks one.

## Add one from the extra collection

Eight extra skills wait in Godspeed Mission Control's public collection on GitHub, such as `plan-my-day` and `summarize-for-me`. [Skills that come with it](/guide/skills-list#extra-skills-you-can-add) lists them all.

In the chat, ask for one by name:

```text
Add the plan-my-day skill.
```

Godspeed fetches it, saves it in your `skills` folder and tells you what it saved.

## Add a skill from anywhere else

> [!WARNING]
> Godspeed follows a skill with your files and accounts. Read the whole skill before you add it.

1. Read the skill's `SKILL.md` from start to end.
2. In the chat, paste the skill's text or give its web address, and name it with the `name` from the skill's header:

   ```text
   Save this as a skill called plan-my-week.
   ```

3. In the notebook, open **Godspeed's brain** in the sidebar and go to **Skills**. You see the new skill in the list, marked **Your own**.

On your own computer you can also copy the skill's folder into the `skills` folder of your mission control folder yourself ([Folders and files](/guide/folders)). `SKILL.md` must sit directly inside that copied folder.

## Check that Godspeed uses it

Start a new conversation (in Telegram, send `/new`), ask for the job without naming the skill, then ask "Which skill did you use?" The notebook's chat is one long conversation that began before the skill existed, so there you name the skill when you ask. [Write your own skill](/guide/write-a-skill#check-that-godspeed-picks-it) has the full check.
